Each summer on the farm has looked a little differ

Each summer on the farm has looked a little different than the last. It’s been madness, from piglets to goslings to puppies tearing through the pastures, my babies running wild in the middle of it all.

But the time runs faster now, I swear. I work to hang on to it, to give them more time, which means less for the farm. I miss it, the feeling of being absolutely useful, but the time I get with my family is better, for us. I feel full, less torn between all the lives I used to have to manage. And to be honest, less heartbroken. Raising animals is a tough gig, friends.

But I have to say….when I come across a memory like this, I’m so happy we did it all in the first place.

Our late Dumbledore ate through the walls of our m

Our late Dumbledore ate through the walls of our mud room in his teenage years.

The legs of all of our chairs and countless sneakers and cherished toys.

But nobody remembers that about him. We remember, instead, how he was the gentlest dog with our children. How he’d never let certain people approach the house. How he kept an entire flock of geese safe for the entirety of his lifespan. How he trained each and every dog that came after him.

How his eyes were more human than not.

So keep in mind, while you are knee deep in puppyhood, that one day you’ll be standing there, holding your dog’s collar in your hands, wishing he was around to eat through another wall.

That barn pony.

You know the one.

The one that lets the kids brush her hair for hours.

Pick her feet.

Ride her around bareback with nothing but a lead around her neck.

Tells them when enough is enough, but gently. She’s the one who’s taught them how to love a horse. What the reward is, about the give and take. She’s given them a gift that will last a lifetime. And they’ll remember her name forever.

I can’t thank our Jackie enough for all the patience she’s given our babies. She came to us years ago with a broken jaw (unknown to us at the time) that had started to heal over, causing a whole boatload of issues that took a small army to figure out. But here she is, nearly seven years later, the very picture of patience. Most days, she’s just out in the yard, munching away, while the kids fawn over her.

She warms my heart.

And drives me crazy. I’ve chased this dog down countless streets, through soggy fields and patches forests. She has never taken note of my panic and desperation when trying to keep her safe. Until lately. She waits and measures my tones now, waiting to see if I’m serious.

I think we need to normalize the difficulty of the puppy journey. Once in awhile, it’s a breeze. But as Juno is reminding me, baby dogs are velociraptor raccoons for the first three years. It’s easy to give up. It’s easy to question yourself.

But stay the course, okay? I’m saying this as much for you as for me. It’s worth it, I swear. Just put some money aside in case you have to replace a door frame or two on your way to developing the best dog of all time✨.

I dreamt this moment up, years ago.

These are the proper moments to be chasing, don’t you think? This is what I visualized when I was still sitting in my city apartment, all those years ago.

Raining. Dogs everywhere. The warmth of house just lingering behind us. The horses hunkering under the shelter. Warm toes in wellies.

And here it is, in real life.

We have spent hours in this field with the dogs. These moments have always been enough, feeding my soul more than anything else has even been able to.

These are the things that matter the most, the creation of such a beautiful everyday that will serve them when they enter the chaos of the rest of the world.

All because I imagined it one day, a long time ago.

If you can raise a dog like this, if you have the patience and discipline to do so, you’ll get their whole heart. The best of the best, the dog that will give you everything until their very last days.

Growing with grace. I think about this all the time, how to change and evolve without tearing the walls down.

The truth is that it is impossible. Turns out that a fair amount of things need to be razed to the ground before the rebuilding can begin. For myself, it means admitting defeat. Admitting that I’ve played a role in whatever situation I find myself in.

It’s not pretty. Sometimes I’ll get things so nice and tidy only to watch everything fall apart, as if to say…”You should have known better, girl. You haven’t done the real work yet.”

But here’s the good news: When you get to this point, when you can shake your head and know that you simply need to get back to work, to shake it off and head back into the fray, that’s when you know that you’re truly on your way to building something worth standing on.

All of our dogs have been raised by the dogs that

All of our dogs have been raised by the dogs that came before them, except for our OG Lyra. Even River was raised by her and she in turn raised Stoik and Dumbledore (our Dalmatian and our late Pyrenees).

When people ask how we can have so many dogs or why it’s so relaxed here, I have to credit our senior pack dogs. They’ve always done the hardest work for me. They translate the words I miss, the things I can’t.

Only one of these dogs is still earth side.

I like to imagine that their heaven looks a little like life on the farm did, on a day like this one. The summer had only just arrived, leaving the air cool and water warm. The trees were full enough to give shade, but not so much so that the light couldn’t push through, the only sounds the hum of the crickets and songs of birds, interrupted by the honest laughter of our children.

When people ask me how I can miss my dogs so much, I explain it as such: Their love is honest. It doesn’t waver or hold grudges unless it’s one that you’ve earned.

They are filled with a joy that inspires me to be better, as my children do. They are kind. They are without malice. There is just the honest exchange of give and take between them and their loved ones.

In short, it is uncomplicated. You get what you give. And no matter what you do, they will end up giving more.

They have always been more than dogs to me. They have been precious guides to bring me through to where I am now.
